Our Return to Mass

15 June 2020
Español abajo

Dear Parishioners,

The Cardinal has granted parishes permission to resume the public celebration of Masses beginning with Daily Mass and then Sunday Mass.

We will begin with a modified schedule, outlined below, for very specific reasons. I’d like to take a moment to explain those reasons to you so that you understand why they have been made. I would prefer not to have to begin this letter talking about our challenges, but they are real and we need to keep our eyes on the bigger picture, planning for the future. We’re going to do great things together, but prudence is even more necessary at the moment.

For the past few years, the parish has operated in the black. Last year we had a $100,000 surplus at the end of the year. This year, which ends at the end of this month, we are projecting a surplus, but very small. The obvious reason is the reduced parish income due to reduced collections. (Let me just take this opportunity to thank those of you who were able to maintain your weekly contributions. I am very grateful.) Just last week, the accountant and I prepared a budget for next year which is based primarily on the past few months of the parish’s financial history. The simple reality is that we are projecting a very significant deficit. This is true for every parish. We just don’t know what the coming year holds. Therefore, it is imperative that we manage our money well and do our best to live within our means.

BMT Parish is very fortunate because we have two active worship sites. In normal times that has not proven to be a challenge; it’s been a great blessing. But we are not living in normal times and so we have to consider whether it makes economic sense to simultaneously air-condition or heat two churches when one facility would satisfy the immediate need. If we are honest with ourselves, the answer would be no. At the same time, our churches have different, but complimentary, problems which are actually helpful.

As everyone knows, the upper Church at St. Mary’s is not air-conditioned. Quite honestly, it is too beastly hot in that church to have regularly scheduled Sunday Masses upstairs during the summertime. While the lower church is air-conditioned, I am not comfortable asking you to congregate in such a confined space given the current situation. Therefore, we will take advantage of the more voluminous air-conditioned space at St. Andrew’s for the summertime, thereby minimizing our expenditures. The only exception is that we will continue with the early morning Daily Mass in the upper church at St. Mary’s but it will be at 7:30 am and will not include a homily; it will be very brief.

When the heating season arrives, we may move all of the Masses to St. Mary’s because the heating system at St. Andrew’s is seriously compromised. There is a cracked steam pipe under the vestibule that needs to be replaced but to replace it would require us to dig up a portion of the vestibule floor. That would be a very expensive band-aid solution to a problem that is more extensive. I believe the more intelligent solution to that problem is to wait until the school is sold and make a proper repair/replacement of the heating and cooling system. I received word last week, on good authority, that the sale should be finalized in the next six to seven months. Again, we need to be good stewards of the resources we have until we see whether our income will be restored. We’ll cross this bridge when we come to it.

Having explained the challenges we face, here is the Mass schedule for the coming weeks. Please understand the schedule is subject to change. I fully expect we will gradually return to a more normal schedule as people come back to church in greater numbers.

The following schedule is effective Monday, June 22, 2020.

Parish Office

The Parish Office will resume normal office hours.

Weekday Mass schedule

M-F        7:30 am        St. Mary          Mass without homily
M-Sa      9:00 am        St. Andrew      Mass with homily

Sunday Mass schedule

Sa           4:00 pm                 St. Andrew         English
Su           8:00, 10:00 am      St. Andrew         English
Su           12:00 pm               St. Andrew         Spanish

Confessions

Confessions will be heard at the “St. Mary Rectory Confessional” located on the back porch of the rectory.

Sa           2:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Now, here’s what you should expect when you come to Mass at BMT Parish:

General Points

  • The obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation continues to be lifted for the time being. You are not required to attend Mass at this time.
  • Please stay home if you don’t feel well, show symptoms of Covid-19, or have been exposed to an infected person within the previous 14 days.
  • Mass will continue to be available on the parish YouTube channel (BMT Parish). St. Andrew’s does not have internet so we will record the 4:00 pm Mass and upload it afterwards. If you have subscribed to the channel, I believe you will receive a notification when it is available. It takes a while to upload and process so I would imagine it should be available around 7 pm.
  • The restroom will be available for emergencies. However, as mom always reminded my siblings and me, “go before leaving the house, whether you have to or not.
  • Disinfecting supplies are in very short supply. Therefore, please bring your own hand sanitizer if you desire to use it. The CDC does not believe the virus is easily transmitted from hard surfaces but through airborne water droplets. Thus, the importance of wearing a mask.
  • While we will do our best with the resources at hand to maintain a clean environment, please understand that no one should expect that they will be any safer in church than in other public spaces such as grocery stores.
  • Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Lectors and Altar Servers will receive a separate communication from this one.

Arriving at the Church

  • Anyone attending Mass must wear a face mask except for the brief time when receiving Holy Communion. The only exceptions are children younger than two years old.
  • Please enter the Church through the main vestibule.
  • The pews will be labeled with the Mass Time. As you enter the church, please sit in the pew corresponding to the time of the Mass.
  • Please proceed to the front of the church and fill in each pew from the center. Do not sit on the end unless that is the only seat available. Also, fill in the pews from the front of the church to the back. Please understand that you most likely will not be sitting in your usual place. Not everyone can sit in the back! Your cooperation is deeply appreciated. As of this writing, we are permitted to occupy the church at 50% of its capacity. Only at Christmas and Easter have we gone beyond that limit at any of our Masses.
  • Members of the same household may sit together as normal. Please maintain the proper six foot distance between households. By now we have a good idea what six feet looks like.

During Mass

  • Missalettes will not be available. You are welcome to bring your own hand missal with you. Just remember to take it with you when you leave. Anything left behind will be thrown in the trash. There will be no lost and found.
  • We are considering creating an electronic worship aid that you could download to your smartphone or tablet. More information on this will follow.
  • There will be no sign of peace.
  • The Precious Blood will not be distributed.
  • The collection will not be taken up as usual. As we have done on other occasions, there will be a basket at the communion station where you can place your collection before receiving communion. If there are two collections, there will be two appropriately labeled baskets.

Reception of Holy Communion

  • If you are uncomfortable receiving Holy Communion during this time, that is fine. Do not feel obligated. You may stay in your pew and make a spiritual communion.
  • For the reception of Holy Communion, we will NOT be using the center aisle to approach the sanctuary. Kindly exit your pew into the side aisles and come forward for communion. Return to your pew using the center aisle.
  • When you receive Holy Communion, STOP and stand still until you have received the host. Any honest priest will tell you that more personal contact is made when communion is distributed to a person who barely pauses to receive than to a person who is stopped still in their place.
  • In the event the minister does make contact, they will purify their fingers before continuing.
  • Gloves may not be worn to receive Holy Communion in the hand.
  • Just before approaching the minister, remove your mask and then replace it when you return to your pew.
  • Please do not respond “Amen.” The minister will do that for you.

After Mass

  • Please exit the church directly. Do not congregate for any reason inside the church.

Final Thoughts

It’ll be great to see everyone again. It’s been a long time and a lot has changed in the past few months. One of our challenges will be getting to know each other again. What I mean is everyone has a different comfort level as we continue learning how to live in the presence of this virus. It seems to me the most important guideline as we acclimate to the immediate new normal is charity in all things accompanied by prudence, patience and hope! I’m looking forward to seeing you!

God Bless,
Fr. Philip

15 de Junio 2020

Estimados Feligreses,

Pensamiento Final

It’ll be great to see everyone again. It’s been a long time and a lot has changed in the past few months. One of our challenges will be getting to know each other again. What I mean is everyone has a different comfort level as we continue learning how to live in the presence of this virus. It seems to me the most important guideline as we acclimate to the immediate new normal is charity in all things accompanied by prudence, patience and hope! I’m looking forward to seeing you!

P. Philip
