St. Mary Church

Earlier this week, the Holy Father announced his intention to Consecrate Russia and Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on Friday, March 25, the Solemnity of the Annunciation. In communion with the Holy Father, we will have a special Holy Hour on Friday evening during which we will pray the Rosary and the Stations of the Cross for peace in Ukraine. This is an incredibly important initiative on the part of the Holy Father. I hope you will join us. The Holy Hour will be at 7 pm at St. Mary’s Church.

Here is a brief summary explaining the importance of the Consecration. It is extracted from the website of the Blue Army (bluearmy.com).

During WWI, one of the most vicious and deadly wars in human history, an angel appeared to three Portuguese children on various occasions while they were tending their flocks. The year was 1916. In the autumn of that year, the angel appeared holding a chalice in his hands. Above the chalice was a host from which drops of blood dripped into the chalice. The angel eventually gave the Host to the three children saying:

Take and drink the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, horribly outraged by ungrateful men. Repair their crimes and console your God.”

They told no one at the time about the appearances of the angel but it is abundantly clear that God is horrified by the violence we inflict upon each other, and He desires to save us from ourselves if we choose to cooperate with Him.

Pope Benedict XV was outraged by the violence and repeatedly called for an end to the war. Having met with little success, he made a public and impassioned plea to the Mother of God in early May 1917. About a week later Our Lady began appearing to the three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal. She asked them to come to meet her on the 13th of the month for the next six months.

During the July 13th apparition, the Blessed Mother showed them a vision of Hell. Then she said to them:

“You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will be peace. The war is going to end; but if people do not cease offending God, a worse one will break out during the Pontificate of Pius XI. When you see a night illumined by an unknown light, know that this is the great sign given you by God that He is about to punish the world for its crimes, by means of war, famine, and persecutions of the Church and of the Holy Father.

“To prevent this, I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart, and the Communion of Reparation on the First Saturdays. If my requests are heeded, Russia will be converted and there will be peace; if not, she will spread her errors throughout the world causing wars and persecutions of the Church. The good will be martyred; the Holy Father will have much to suffer; various nations will be annihilated. In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me, and she will be converted, and a period of peace will be granted to the world.”

True to her promise, the Blessed Mother appeared to Sr. Lucia, now in a convent, on June 13, 1929, saying:

“The moment has come in which God asks the Holy Father, in union with all the bishops of the world, to make the Consecration of Russia, promising to save it by this means…”

In the nearly 100 years since the request, Russia has been consecrated on a number of occasions. Many critics claim they haven’t been properly done. They cite the lack of peace in the world as their evidence. Regardless, Sr. Lucia says the Consecration was finally carried out properly in 1984. We are not in a position to debate the fact. We are, however, in a position to assist the Holy Father as he Consecrates Russia and Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary once again. The world cannot invoke the protective care of Our Mother too often.

Much attention has been placed on the Consecration, but we would be remiss if we did not recognize that the Blessed Mother’s request was two-fold: She requested the Holy Father to make the Consecration and she has asked all of us to make the Communion of Reparation on the First Saturdays. Perhaps the Lord is waiting for us to commit to the First Saturday Devotion?

The First Saturday Devotion, as revealed to Sr. Lucia on December 10, 1925, is this:

“Mary told Lucia to announce that she promised to provide at the hour of death, the graces necessary for salvation to those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months, confessed, received Holy Communion, recited five decades of the Rosary and kept her company while meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary for 15 minutes, with the purpose of making reparation to her.”

My brothers and sisters, the war in Ukraine has attracted the attention of the world like no other war in recent memory. I suspect that’s because it seems to have been unprovoked and the aggressor is so much larger and stronger than the victim. So, let us put aside our normal Friday evening plans and gather together in prayer as a humble gift to Our Lord and Lady on behalf of our brothers and sisters who suffer so unjustly the ravages of war.

Hora Santa por la Paz
Viernes, Marzo 25, 7 pm
