Funeral Planner

Please accept our condolences on the passing of your loved one and be assured of our prayers during this difficult time.

The family is welcome to choose the readings and music for the Funeral Mass using the information contained in the form below. However, if you would like the priest and music director to make the selections, they would be more than happy to do so.

1. Choose the Readings

You may choose to have one or two readings prior to the Gospel. The links below will redirect you to the website of the US Bishop's Conference where you will find the individual readings. Once you make your choice, remember to make note of the reading by recording the Book, Chapter and Verses. For example, 2 Maccabees 12:43-46. Then, come back to this page and select your readings from the dropdown lists below.

If you would like to have just one reading, choose it from the Old Testament or New Testament.

If you would like to have two readings, choose the first reading from the Old Testament and the second reading from the New Testament.

Please note: If the funeral is during the Easter Season, the Old Testament reading is replaced by a separate selection of New Testament Readings.

Having chosen the readings, you may choose whether a family member or friend does the reading(s) or whether you’d like the priest to do the reading(s). If you choose a family member or friend, they should be practicing Catholics preferably with some experience reading at Mass. Simply alert the priest before the Mass as to your desire. If you have reader(s), please print the chosen reading(s) for them so they can be familiar with them before Mass. They do not need to bring that copy with them to the Mass; we have a proper Lectionary from which they will read. Finally, the priest will meet the reader(s) briefly before the Mass to show them the Lectionary and give them some last minute instructions.  The Responsorial Psalm will be sung by the cantor.

First Reading (The Easter Season runs from Easter Sunday to Pentecost)

Old Testament (Outside of Easter Season Only)

New Testament (During the Easter Season Only)

Second Reading

New Testament

2. Choose the Music

You are welcome to select up to three hymns. The organist and the cantor will choose an appropriate time for the hymns to be sung during the Mass. You may also wish that the organist and cantor select the hymns for the Mass. Please note that hymn titles followed by an asterisk (*) contain the word “Alleluia,” which is not permissible during the Season of Lent.

Traditional solos sung by our professional cantor, such as Panis Angelicus (setting by Franck), Ave Maria (settings by Schubert or Bach/Gounod), I know that my Redeemer liveth from the Messiah (Handel) and Pie Jesu (setting by Fauré) are also welcome additions to the funeral liturgy.

Please note: Following the guidelines of the sacred liturgy expressed in the introduction to The Order of Christian Funerals, secular songs are never permitted:

“Music is integral to the Funeral rites. It allows the community to express convictions and feelings that words alone may fail to convey. It has the power to console and uplift the mourners and to strengthen the unity of the assembly in faith and love. The texts of the songs chosen for a particular celebration should express the paschal mystery of the Lord’s suffering, death, and triumph over death and should be related to the readings from Scripture.” - Order of Christian Funerals, 30.

The funeral home or the repast is a fitting occasion for a beloved secular song.

If there is a specific hymn from a Catholic source not listed above, please do not hesitate to contact our music director at music@bmtparish.org.
