Dear Parishioners,

During the past month or so, the heating system at St. Andrew’s has presented a few problems that are rather serious in nature.

As you know, any heating system is composed of the furnace and the distribution system. We have problems with both at the moment. Mike O’Rourke has been a God-send over the years helping to maintain the heating system and has been very helpful in helping us diagnose the current problems. I’ll try to describe them the best I can so you can visualize the issues we face.

The steam is distributed to the radiators by pipes located in a trench (crawl space) that surrounds the perimeter of the church. The exterior wall of the trench is the foundation wall of the church. The interior wall is brick. The ceiling of the trench is the underside of the church floor. The floor of the trench is dirt. Because the space is very tight, maintenance is extraordinarily difficult, if not impossible, in certain areas. For example, the distribution pipes under the vestibule are rotted through and can’t be replaced without digging up the floor. This is why there is no heat in the vestibule.

Now, about a month ago, Hector started monitoring the water consumption of the furnace. It became apparent that we had a major leak. In about a month’s time, we have lost at least 2600 gallons of water in the trench along the Story Court side of the church. When Mike was here last week, there was 4 inches of muddy water in the trench that will need to dissipate and dry out before anyone can go into the trench. To minimize the loss of water and any potential damage to the foundation of the church, we have temporarily removed the radiators along the Story Court side of the church from the distribution system. Consequently, we were trying to heat the entire church with the four radiators along the Broadway side of the church. It’s an unsatisfactory solution. This past weekend we were unable to raise the temperature inside the church above 60F. And that was with mild temperatures. I believe it is unreasonable to expect that we will effectively be able to heat the church with the cold weather that will certainly arrive.

As for the furnace, the device that mixes the air with the oil for combustion has begun to disintegrate. That can, and will, be repaired.

After consulting with Bishop Studerus, the Vicar for Hudson County, and the Property Management Office, I’ve decided to move all Masses for this winter’s heating season to St. Mary’s Church. It’s going to take a while to repair the leak and get the heating system up and running again. During the summer season, we move all our summer Masses to St. Andrew’s Church to take advantage of the air conditioning at St. Andrew’s. Now, it only seems logical to take advantage of the fact that St. Mary’s Church has a properly functioning heating system. So, effective immediately, all Masses scheduled for St. Andrew’s will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church at the regularly scheduled times.

Durante el último mes, el sistema de calefacción de San Andrés ha presentado varios problemas que son de naturaleza bastante serios.

Como saben, cualquier sistema de calefacción está compuesto por un horno y un sistema de distribución. En estos momentos, tenemos problemas con ambos. Mike O’Rourke, ha sido enviado-por-Dios y a lo largo de los años nos ha ayudado a mantener el sistema de calefacción y ayudado mucho a diagnosticar los problemas actuales. Trataré de describirlos lo mejor posible para que puedan visualizar los problemas que enfrentamos. 

El vapor se distribuye a los radiadores por tuberías ubicadas en una zanja (espacio de arrastre) que rodea el perímetro de la iglesia. La pared exterior de la zanja es el muro de los cimientos de la iglesia. La pared interior es de ladrillo. El techo de la zanja es la parte inferior del piso de la iglesia. El suelo de la zanja es de tierra. Debido a que el espacio es sumamente estrecho, el mantenimiento es extraordinariamente difícil, si no imposible, en ciertas áreas. Por ejemplo, las tuberías de distribución debajo del vestíbulo están podridas y no se pueden reemplazar sin excavar el piso. Es por esta razón que no hay calefacción en el vestíbulo.

Ahora, hace aproximadamente un mes, Héctor comenzó a monitorear el consumo de agua del horno. Se hizo evidente que teníamos una fuga enorme. En cuestión de un mes hemos perdido al menos 2600 galones de agua en la zanja a lo largo del lado de Story Court de la iglesia. Cuando Mike estuvo aquí la semana pasada, había 4 pulgadas de agua fangosa en la zanja que tendrá que disiparse y secar antes de que alguien pueda entrar en la zanja. Para disminuir la pérdida de agua y cualquier daño potencial al cimiento de la iglesia, hemos removido temporalmente los radiadores a lo largo del lado de Story Court de la iglesia del sistema de distribución. Consecuentemente, estábamos tratando de calendar toda la iglesia con los cuatro radiadores a lo largo del lado de Broadway de la iglesia. Es una solución insatisfactoria. Este fin de semana que pasó no pudimos elevar la temperatura dentro de la iglesia por encima de los 60F. Y eso fue con temperaturas suaves. Creo que no es razonable esperar que podamos efectivamente calentar la iglesia con el frio que sin duda llegará.

En cuanto al horno, el equipo que mezcla el aire con el aceite para la combustión ha comenzado a desintegrarse. Eso se puede reparar, y se reparará.

Después de consultar con el Obispo Studerus, Vicario del Condado Hudson, y la Oficina de Administración de Propiedades, he decidido trasladar todas las Misas durante la temporada de calefacción de este invierno a la Iglesia Santa María. Va a demorar un tiempo reparar la fuga y arreglar el sistema de calefacción. Durante la temporada de verano, trasladamos todas nuestras Misas de Verano a San Andrés para aprovechar el aire acondicionado de San Andrés. Ahora bien, parece lógico que aprovechemos el hecho de que la Iglesia Santa María tiene un sistema de calefacción que funciona adecuadamente. Por lo tanto, con efecto inmediato, todas las Misas programadas para San Andrés serán celebradas en la Iglesia Santa María en los horarios programados regularmente.
